Osteoarthritis and Calcium Fructoborate Supplements: An Open-Label Pilot Study.

SUMMARY

This study was designed to find out the effectiveness of Calcium Fructoborate (FruiteX-B) for the symptoms associated with osteoarthritis. 20 Patients were split into two groups based on the severity of their arthritis and both groups were given FruiteX-B. FruiteX-B was shown to decrease pain and stiffness and improve range of motion. FruiteX-B was well tolerated and worked well when taken with conventional medications. Many participants were able to take less of their medication, thereby decreasing risk of side effects from their medication. FruiteX-B decreased pain and movement restriction better than glucosamine when compared to a previous study. It was also more beneficial than a previously studied form of boron.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mild to moderate arthritis group after 8 weeks
    • 2/3 stopped using pain medications
    • 77.7% experienced less or no movement restrictions
    • 83.3% had less pain or no pain climbing stairs
    • 30% noticed better memory
  • Severe arthritis group after 8 weeks
    • 75% were using less or no pain medications
    • 1/2 had less stiffness
    • 62.5% had better movement
    • 70% had less or no pain when moving or during the night
  • FruiteX-B was more beneficial than a previously studied form of boron
  • When results were compared to glucosamine sulfate study, FruiteX-B was found to have similar overall reduction of symptoms, and greater reduction of pain and movement restriction

Vitamin D/ Steroid Hormone Homeostasis and Calcium Fructoborate Supplementation

SUMMARY

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Calcium Fructoborate (FruiteX-B) and Vitamin D. This study also looked at the effects of Calcium Fructoborate on hormones such as DHEA and Testosterone. 13 vitamin D deficient participants were tested for levels of vitamin D, DHEA, and testosterone in the blood. After taking 6mg or Boron in the form of Calcium Fructoborate, for 60 days the participants' blood was tested again. The average increase in vitamin D levels was 19.6%. DHEA and testosterone were also increased 56% and 29.5% respectively.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • FruiteX-B increased Vitamin D 19.6%, DHEA 56%, and Free Testosterone 29.5%
  • One male participant had an increase of 50% in testosterone
  • There was shown to be a relationship between FruiteX-B and hormone balance

In Vitro Effects of Calcium Fructoborate on fMLP-stimulated Human Neutrophil Granulocytes

SUMMARY

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Calcium Fructoborate( FruiteX-B) on cells that play a large role in the inflammatory response, polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN). FruiteX-B increased apoptosis in PMN which is an important step in the resolution of inflammation. It also decreased respiratory burst 92.9%, superoxide levels 59.3% and increased SOD activity 72%. The evidence presented in this study suggest that FruiteX-B has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • FruiteX-B inhibited respiratory burst 92.9%, decreased level of superoxide 59.3%, and increased the antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity 72% in a human immune cell that is crucial to inflammation
  • Results suggest that FruiteX-B has beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties

Agricultural Practices Affect Arthritis

SUMMARY

Soil levels of boron have decreased a significant amout over the past 50 years. Boron has been shown to be beneficial for the symptoms of arthritis. Counties with estimated daily intakes of boron that were less than 1mg per day were found to have 50-70% occurance of arthritis. Counties that were estimated to eat 10mg or more per day were found to have less than 1% occurrence of arthritis. Use of fertilizer and other farming techniques that increase yield have created a decrease in the availability of trace minerals like boron.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Countries with the lowest levels of boron in the soil were found to have the highest incidences of arthritis
  • Regions with higher boron intake had a significantly lower percentage of arthritis cases
  • Heavy use of synthetic fertilizers were suspected to have affected the level of boron in the soil

Dietary Boron as a Physiological Regulator of the Normal Inflammatory Response: A Review and Current Research Progress

SUMMARY

There is evidence presented by scientist at the USDA that boron acts as a modulator of the inflammatory response. This review highlights some of the research that exists to support this concept. Boron and boron compounds have been used historically to treat inflammatory and arthritic conditions. Many mechanism exist by which boron has been shown to affect inflammation including: affecting respiratroy burst, increased destruction of ROS, and decreasing activity of destructive inflammatory enzymes. The evidence presented supports the hypothesis that boron can decrease the risk of inflammatory disease while not interfering with the bodies immune function (immune modulation).

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Boron compounds are used in India in prescriptions for inflammatory issues, including joint issues
  • Boron shown to decrease respiratory burst, which creates oxidation and contributes to inflammation
  • Evidence that boron increases glutathione and significantly increase SOD activity
  • Boron has been shown to decrease the activity of destructive enzymes produced during inflammation
  • There is evidence that boron compounds may have inhibitory effects on the COX and LOX enzymes involved in inflammation
  • Boron has been shown to have affects on cells that influence the inflammatory response
  • There is evidence that boron can act to modulate the inflammatory response, decreasing damaging inflammation without interfering with the normal immune response

Essentiality of Boron for Healthy Bones and Joint

SUMMARY

There has been a growing body of evidence that boron is safe and effective for some types of arthritis. Many people have experienced symptom relief when taking boron. People with arthritis tend to have low levels of boron in the joints and bones. Those taking boron have stronger bones. Evidence exists that people that consume the lowest amounts or boron have the highest amounts of arthritis. There is experimental evidence that boron is beneficial for people and animals who exhibit signs of arthritis. The author concludes that the evidence presented indicates an essential role of boron in arthritis.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • There is accumulating evidence that boron is effective for arthritis
  • Evidence that boron eased joint pain and discomfort
  • Lower boron levels found in joints with arthritic joints compared with healthy joints
  • Stronger bones observed with those taking boron
  • Epidemiological research shows those areas with lowest boron content in the soil have the highest amounts of arthritis
  • Boron indicated as essential for healthy joints
